I haven't been here since I was a kid, using a towel as a parachute. Now the ocean and rocks remind me of a japanese watercolor, and some pretty hard landings.

Shots in the Dark (part 2)

Experiment gone awry: 35mm film pentax, fast 50mm lens, 3200 iso b&w film, and a broken light meter. Shooting film has always been something I wanted to get into more, much more in theory than in practice. This is the 2nd roll of film I've developed. The attraction: film grain is so much more stylish than digital noise. It turns out that developing and printing b&w film has become somewhat of a specialty since it has to be done by hand, thus more expensive and more likely to be ruined by the new guy. I will say that it was kind of fun not knowing how any of my shots would turn out until I got them back, only to curse the new guy. Live and learn: keep shooting digital.

Circus Vargas was leaving town and curiosity drove me to see how they break down a circus tent at night. I'm glad I went because it turned out the circus vargas folks are a great group of people, and since they were getting a new tent, it was the last time this one would be used.

Met up with Rob again for the first time in a while. Seems like I've known him as long as I've lived in Ventura. Cool but crazy; he probably has more hardware holding him together than bones, and still bombs down hills like a madman.

Lately I've been frequenting local machine shops and a boxing gym in Oxnard when my shutter finger gets restless. As it turns out, it's the same gym Fernando Vargas (who lost to Oscar De La Hoya and dropped out of the sport) used to train at, which is pretty cool since he was my favorite professional boxer for a time before he let fame go to his head.

Last weekend I traveled up north to visit my folks out in Arroyo Seco (near Carmel) where a team comprised mostly of volunteers were running a helicopter base which refilled the choppers with fire retardant. Never really saw any flames, but all the smoke looked pretty cool.

Jacob's Grad

My friend and colleague from Cameroon, Jacob Foko, recently graduated from Brooks. As if that wasn't enough he gave a speech at the ceremony, and at city hall soon after. He also screened his doc "Flux Mothers" from his trip to Congo. This caught the attention of a camera crew from CNN, and their story on Jacob should air in August. I should get an autograph while I have the chance!
